Thornton sustaining frozen and breaking pipes

Water Damage Thornton sustaining frozen and breaking pipes Frozen pipes in Thornton

The Polar Vortex has spared no town from the stresses of frozen and breaking pipes, Thornton is no exception.

Once the pipes are frozen there is not much you can do until the overall air temperature comes back up. A few ideas that might help (but not guaranteed) would be to keep your water faucets open. This will help alleviate some pressure that may be building within the walls of the pipe. It also may allow the pipe to warm up some, by opening the pipe up to room temperature air.

Keeping cabinet doors open that contain plumbing devices is another idea. It allows warmer air to circulate around the pipes, which may help warm the pipes up as well.

If you are able to locate the suspected area of the freeze, sometimes using a hair dryer or small space heater can warm the pipe up enough to thaw the freeze.

There are some other ways to warm pipes up but we would caution you against against using anything with a open flame, electricity, and even advise caution when using a space heater.

If they don't work, there isn't much you can do at this point, other than keeping the faucets open, in hopes that it will help with the pressure build up.

Should one break, close the main water shut off to the structure, call a plumber, and call SERVPRO of Chicago Heights-Crete-Beecher
