Sump Pumps Failures Are Horrible To Experience - Leave The Mess To SERVPRO

5/31/2022 (Permalink)

What does a sump pump do?

The main idea behind a sump pump is that it senses when water levels in the pit reach a specific level.  Once the water has reached that level, the activator sensor will trigger a fan on.  This fan pushes water towards the pipe sending water down the storm drain instead on him you home.  If any part of this process fails you can end up with water flooding your basement.

Why do sup pumps fail?

There are about 6 common reasons that sump pumps fail and basements then flood.

  • Clog in the pump- a sump pump can become clogged with dirt or other debris.
  • Clogged discharge pipe- this can be clogged by dirt, mud or ice if it freezes.
  • Loss of power- investing in a battery backup will protect you.
  • Defective- yes even sump pumps can be bad right from the start, so always test it and keep you receipt.
  • over use- when heavy rains cause the sump pump to work non stop, that can quickly over heat the pump and cause a failure.
  • incorrectly installed- if you sump pump is running when there is no water in the pit that  may mean it has not been installed correctly.

What do I do if I get water in my basement in my Beecher home?

When sup pumps fail, it is important to call the restoration experts at SERVPRO of Chicago Heights / Crete / Beecher.  We will suggest that you also call a pumper to have a new sump pump installed correctly.  While you are waiting for our crews to show up, please stay safely out of any standing water.
